Like other games of the series, Suikoden II employs a unique character leveling system from most RPGs. There is a fixed amount of experience points needed to gain each level, and experience gained after battles is determined by the difference in levels between the party members and enemies. This allows for low-level characters to catch up to the levels of enemies at later points in the game quickly, and reduce the need for level grinding.

Runes, the source of all magic in the world of Suikoden II, are handled the same as the original Suikoden. Characters have a certain number of spell usages per "spell level"; for instance, a character with four level 1 spell slots and a Fire Rune could cast "Flaming Arrows" (the level 1 Fire Rune spell) four times. Some specialized runes or skill-based runes have different rules, such as unlimited use or a single use per battle.
Updates from the original Suikoden include a grid and unit based tactical battle system, the addition of a three rune slot system which allows for three different runes to be equipped at once, a party inventory system, a "dash" button that allowed the player to move around the screen quicker, and vast graphical improvement. Also notable is the inclusion of a variety of mini-games including one quite reminiscent of Iron Chef. A transfer of data from the prior game in the series enables returning characters to enter the fray with higher levels and improved weapons. References to the original Suikoden are also adapted accordingly for a greater feel in continuity.
After arriving in Muse, Riou and Jowy are asked to participate in a spy mission to the Highland army camp, and while returning Jowy is captured by the enemy. Jowy is able to escape back to Muse but begins to act strangely after returning. Meanwhile, while trying to rally into battle against Highland, the individual leaders of the City-States collapse into petty bickering and infighting. As the Highland army approaches to attack Muse, however, Jowy murders the leader of Muse, Anabelle, and opens the city gates to let the Highland army in. Riou and Nanami, distraught over Jowy's betrayal, flee with the surviving members of Viktor's mercenary group south across Lake Dunan to regroup.
During this time, it is learned that Jowy had made a deal with Luca Blight while captured to be allowed to assist Highland in defeating the City-States, in exchange for helping Luca achieve his personal ambitions. Jowy rises through the ranks of the Highland army after capturing Greenhill without even a battle, marries Luca's sister Princess Jillia, and plots with Luca to murder the King of Highland. However, Jowy reveals to some trusted lieutenants within the Highland army that his support for Luca is a ruse, that he believes Luca's insanity and cruelty are a threat to both Highland and Jowston, and he intends to betray Luca after building his own base of support. After becoming King of Highland, Luca launches an attack against the New State Army. Jowy uses the pending attack to betray Luca by warning the New State Army and giving Riou information on Luca's whereabouts. Riou and the New State Army ambush Luca and he is killed. Jowy then becomes king of Highland through his marriage to Jillia.
While the start of the tournament is being officially announced, Kasumi finds Ayane in the crowd. Ayane tells her that she is there to avenge Hayate too, as well as kill her, under the orders of her foster father Genra. The girls quickly discover that Raidou is working with the head of DOATEC, Fame Douglas, but when Ayane tries to get him, even though Kasumi tries to stop her, the girl is beaten back. Fame then tells Kasumi that if she wants to face Raidou in battle, she has to come out as winner in the tournament.
Kasumi fights her way through the tournament, and does come out as the winner of the tournament, meaning that she will have to face Raidou in the Danger Zone. She manages to defeat Raidou, and was happy because she thinks she had avenged Hayate, but Raidou awakens stronger than before, with inhuman strength caused by DOATEC experiments. Their battle ends in a Torn Sky Blast duel, and with the help of Ryu Hayabusa from the sidelines, Kasumi overpowers Raidou in the end and he is finally killed.
Sometime later, Kasumi finds Hayate alive and well, but as Hayate is suffering from amnesia, he cannot remember her. Hayabusa appears before them and tells the two siblings to fight each other, as "once reunited in combat, fists which are bound by blood will revive the deepest soul of the shinobi", meaning that Hayate will remember his true self. During the fight, Kasumi is defeated, and Hayate remembers everything. While Hayate and Hayabusa have to fight Alpha and a brainwashed Ayane, set upon them by Genra, Kasumi presumbly wakes up and runs away, as Hayate cannot find her after the battle.
Hayabusa sent a message to the real Kasumi telling her of their problem and she finally comes out of hiding to aid them. She rushes to the oil platform and fights her way past Christie and Rig to get to Hayate, who had been forced into reactivating Project Epsilon. With Lisa's help, the shinobi succeeded in releasing him, however they are too late to stop Donovan from beginning Phase 4 of Project Alpha: mass production of the best clones. Following a long battle against Alpha-152, the clone and the lab is destroyed, with the shinobi managing to escape.
However, in Dead or Alive 5, in the last chapter of story mode, Kasumi's personality has changed drastically. She's still the caring person that she is, however, Kasumi is shown to be mentally stronger. She is shown to engage in battle when she needs to instead of avoiding it. An example of this is when she fights Christie, who was in her way. She also has a much stronger will as she was ready to destroy the Phase 4 project and defeat Victor Donovan at any cost. She is seen to be much happier as well and is finally at peace with both Hayate and Ayane. She also seems to have great maturity for someone her age.
Not only is it one of the first horror games to ever exist as well as the direct inspiration for Resident Evil, it also stands as a fun and unique classic-style RPG title with heavy horror inspirations. Turn-Based battles meet item collecting and survival. This game can be frustrating and unfair at times, but it adds to the challenge and risks you must take as death is permanent. The game strays from some RPG tropes, though many still exist such as some required grinding, though not nearly as much in many other RPGs; combat actually takes a backseat in this title comparatively. Not only is it worth checking out for those who want to get to know the history of the genre, but also as a quality retro horror & RPG NES game. However, since it was released only in Japan (it was deemed to violent for American audiences at the time) a fan translation patch is available for the game.
Shu's destruction soon causes many of the independent factions to strengthen themselves in anticipation to his next move. Orochi's next battle soon takes place at Kawanakajima, facing off against the allied forces of Shingen Takeda and Kenshin Uesugi, both considered military marvels of their period. Unimpressed, Orochi sweeps through their army and then orders Zhuge Liang to eliminate the Wu forces.
Orochi's dream mode in Musou OROCHI Z has him divide his forces into two for a large-scale mock battle at Baidi Castle, fighting Da Ji's forces. Despite Da Ji calling on multiple allies such as Cao Pi, Dong Zhuo and both Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu, Orochi is able to defeat her. As soon as this occurs, a messenger arrives reporting that Ueda Castle, which housed the captured Zhao Yun, had been infiltrated. With his boredom sated, he returns back to his castle. Orochi X's dream mode simultaneously challenging the leaders of every main faction against him -Shu, Wei, Wu, Samurai, the Mystics, Tadakatsu and Lu Bu- at Koshi Castle. He teams with Da Ji and Kiyomori and his remaining followers include Masamune, Sun Wukong, and Himiko. He wonders if there is any warrior among this large army who could grant him eternal slumber once more. After defeating the great army, he returns triumphant to his castle, telling the defeated to become stronger in order to face him once more.
In Warriors Orochi 4, Orochi is revived beyond the grave again, alongside Orochi X by Odin, by capturing and using Shuten Dōji's body as a catalyst the moment he arrived into the fused world. Orochi X is revived in front of Odin and Da Ji, much to her dismay, while the regular Orochi is revived elsewhere. The Orochi Army including Kiyomori Taira all follow Orochi X, and to an extent, Odin's Army, to terrorize the Coalition forces in various battles. Later on, the Coalition forces confronted Orochi X to no avail, as Kiyomori Taira repeatedly healed him. A cutscene then plays where, moments before Orochi X executes someone, Orochi suddenly appears as a temporary ally, intercepts Orochi X's beam and confronts his X form, much to everyone's surprise. At this moment, the warriors finally remembered all the events that happened prior to the latest installment. After defeating Kiyomori, the Coalition and Orochi pressed the attack on Orochi X, but failed to defeat him. On their way to defeating Odin, Orochi X stood in their way. The Coalition forces, alongside Orochi, finally defeated Orochi X. In a cutscene, Orochi X falls as Orochi stands in front of him, challenging everyone, while Kiyomori and Da Ji both flock to their true lord. Orochi is then slain by the hands of Fu Xi and Susano'o, and is put back into eternal slumber, before giving Fu Xi a one last smile, implying that the soul of his former-self as Yinglong still exists within him. Orochi X and Orochi would then revert to Shuten Dōji and brought back to the Mystic Realm at the final cutscene.
Orochi has a powerful desire to battle someone who can end his life, as hinted by various lines he speaks, Wei's ending in Warriors Orochi 2 and the Showdown at Yamatai Dream Mode level containing Lu Bu, Keiji Maeda, and Tadakatsu Honda. It is possible that he seeks peace in death, perhaps as atonement for his own corruption. 2ff7e9595c
