Quick tip: Downloaded maps do expire. According to Google, you have up to 15 days after you dow load it before it's automatically deleted. Make sure you update the directions on Google Maps during that time frame.

And iGeneration reports that Apple has set up a Mechanical Turk-style user programme for verifying the data in its maps. Those who contribute will be paid around 54 cents per location, up to 600 times a week.
Having the ability to navigate around using your chosen maps app is a dealbreaker for most people. Both services provide various options for route planning: Apple Maps offers driving, walking, public transport and ride-booking apps, while Google adds cycling too.
ALOHA allows you to enter details about a real or potential chemical release, and then it will generate threat zone estimates for various types of hazards. ALOHA can model toxic gas clouds, flammable gas clouds, BLEVEs (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosions), jet fires, pool fires, and vapor cloud explosions. The threat zone estimates are shown on a grid in ALOHA, and they can also be plotted on maps in MARPLOT (Mapping Application for Response, Planning, and Local Operational Tasks), Esri's ArcMap, Google Earth, and Google Maps. The red threat zone represents the worst hazard level, and the orange and yellow threat zones represent areas of decreasing hazard.
ALOHA's help topics include an example problem that you can work through to familiarize yourself with the program. You can also download the ALOHA Examples, which has three additional step-by-step fictional example scenarios.
I downloaded the trial version which comes pre-loaded with vector street maps of Santa Fe, NM and a topographic map of Yosemite National Park. You can (without internet) easily search addresses, navigate, set waypoints, etc. and their website also lists several other features such as route statistics/elevation data/GPS support, among others, which I presume is available only in the full version.
Since this is an offline mapping tool, you'll have to download the maps and check everything before your trip. Although it feels a bit slow to zoom in the first time, it's faster the second time onwards, once the data has been cached.
It's a bit unclear on this other wiki page but this table for Map display features has this curious column Stores map-data off-board (downloads from internet), sounds like offline support but maybe under different terminology hopefully? This may be a separate concept however, maybe with tiling, I couldn't find a definition of "off-board" in a reasonable time.
Apple finally got a foothold with the release of iOS 13 and iPadOS 13. The updated Apple Maps ditched third-party navigation data in favor of fresh data gathered directly by Apple. The new, updated maps are far more detailed and accurate, based on millions of miles driving in camera- and lidar-equipped cars, new high-resolution satellite images, Apple employees canvassing neighborhoods on foot with radar modules strapped to their backs, and tons of aerial photography.
Google Maps is a cross-platform service, made available on Android, iOS, iPadOS, web browsers, and so on. The app comes pre-installed on Android but must be downloaded from the App Store on iOS and iPadOS devices.
Apple Maps has similar functions. Pull up the tab at the bottom to access saved locations (aka Favorites), recent searches, and add specific, frequently-visited locations under My Places. The 3D option appears when maps are viewed in Satellite mode.
One other popular Google Maps feature is offline access. This facilitates offline planning for those with limited access to Wi-Fi or data. While Apple Maps uses slightly less data than Google Maps, Google compensates by allowing you to download entire maps for offline use.
Overall, Google Maps wins this competition due to its maturity, interface, accurate maps, and multi-platform availability. Our Apple Maps tips and tricks and Google Maps tips and tricks will give you the rundown on both platforms.
First, while you still have an active internet connection, download all your offline maps for whatever areas you want. Once downloaded, those maps remain accessible for 30 days, even when you do not have a working internet connection. So folks that do a lot of driving, especially in spots without data coverage, downloading your maps is a fantastic option to literally keep you on track!
So, from what we understand you cannot use an offline map AND get live traffic updates. It seems that Google Maps will only access that downloaded map if it detects a loss or a slow down in the internet connection.

To ensure security during MAP Growth testing, students on Windows or Mac desktops use a secure browser from NWEA. This browser restricts access to outside resources. You will download the browser from NWEA, and then install or distribute it to each computer.
This wikiHow teaches you how to save directions from Google Maps to your computer as a PDF document, using a desktop internet browser. When saving, you can choose to include a map image and written directions, or exclude the map and only download the written directions.
Knowing how to download offline Google Maps is an important skill to know, especially if you're heading off into the great unknown. you don't want to get lost, simply because there's no cell signal, after all.
Fortunately accessing Google Maps offline is easier than ever, and in most cases won't require you to actually do anything. Considering how valuable a navigational tool it is, those offline maps can come in handy. Especially if you plan on doing some traveling over the holidays.
It's understandable if you'd rather download your maps manually, rather than rely on Google Maps functioning correctly all the time. Fortunately this is incredibly easy to accomplish, and can be done in two different ways. The most effective way is as follows:
Google Maps can prompt you to do this manually, but there is a way to let the app do things automatically. That way you will always have access to directions, even if you didn't think to download a map of the area beforehand.
While it doesn't offer an obvious option for offline navigation outright, Apple Maps nonetheless has this feature built in, as it caches your current destination and saves it until you end your route. This means that even if you enter an area with poor cellular service, navigation will still go relatively smoothly as long as you have "Location Services" enabled. You can also pull up basic maps for locations offline.
These are not "offline maps". This is a caching feature that reduces the amount of data used and can provide some offline capabilities, but it should not be thought to replace an offline maps feature. Other map applications (not just Google Maps) allows you to specify a region to download and will purposefully store that map data on your device, keep them updated periodically, and even provide offline navigation. This article should note that this is a workaround and not make this sound like a feature of the app.
I use this feature in Google Maps (and MAPS.ME before it was available added to Google Maps) for my own safety in addition to keeping a paper map in my car. This came in handy a few years ago when my family got disoriented in Yellowstone. While we were never in any true danger, it was nice having the maps without an Internet connection. All it took was a little fore thought and a few taps on my phone, no scrolling around and zooming on the map required.
I agree very much! This was solid info but a little deceptive in the tittle. Lot of this floating around lately. Reminds me of the guy who can 'unlock iPhone using Siri' . It's really helpful o distinguish between workaround vs fix vs feature etc. If we hold ppl accountable to correct terminology we can help avoid the misdirections . A lot of write ups like this do little more than reiterate info from the product website , or describe same features in different way . GadgetHacks as usual does us right though with some new knowledge at least, def not everyone knows to zoom in and it auto saves maps for later. Nor that you could hit airplane mode after starting navigation and maintain Live navigating, so props there GH! 2ff7e9595c
